PSYCH 240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Memory Span, Mental Calculation, Fluid And Crystallized Intelligence
Document Summary
Working memory is the system for temporarily storing information in our mind. Early tests of iq were span tests- had to repeat sequence of numbers of items back. Some length of digits that is over your span and you cannot remember those; how many items can you hold on to in your mind at one time. One example is a reading span task where you are presented a series of sentences and must hold in mind the last word of each sentence. Do this until you break down and determine span; wm span is the number of final word you can remember. Raven"s progressive matrices: see some pattern of stimuli, and there is a blank and you must choose which option fills in that blank. Go through and see what you need to complete based on the information provided. Remember in mind what you need as you look for other commonalties; actively holding on to information.
