PSYCH 280 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Processing Fluency, Availability Heuristic
Document Summary
Some schemas are chronically accessible due to past experience. Accessibility - extent to which schemas and concepts are at the forefront of people"s minds and are therefore likely to be used when making judgements in the social world. Something can become accessible because it"s related to a current goal. Priming - process by which recent experiences increase the accessibility of a schema, trait, or concept. What you"re seeing matches up with schema. Ex: cop tv show is a drama, not a comedy. Ex: if you have heard whether a teacher is nice or mean. Self-fulfilling prophecy - when someone has an expectation about what another person is like. This expectation affects how they act towards this person, causing the other person to behave consistently with the original expectation. Ex: i expect someone to be rude, i am rude to them, and in response to this they are rude and live up to my expectations.
