Sociology is the study of human groups: their origin, development, structure, function, and significance for social life i. ii. Sociologists are very curious and they pursue this with scientific methodology. Intersection of biography (looking at individuals) and history (looking at how whole societies evolved) Where lives of individuals intersect with larger social realities. Ex: how do individuals" troubles relate to a larger social issue, poor person, dropout, education system. Interested in the things outside of you (social structures) that drive you in particular ways. Sociology is more important than biology/psych (individuals) to understanding human behaviour. How do groups affect each other, the world around them, and the lives of their. Ex: when you leave college you"ll be different than when you came because you were a part of the um community. Ex: crowley (police officer) arrested gates (black professor) gates had trouble getting into his house and they came and arrested him for breaking and entering.
