Inhabiting Social Structures
1. Models of Society
Models of Society
Cell metaphor: has its own parts that work together in a symbiotic relation to keep it thriving
Each part of society fulfills a particular function (ex. education, media, crime)
This is normal and desirable
Conflict represents some kind of breakdown; unnatural Where does the individual fit into this system?
How do you encourage social integration?
Problem: people feeling separated from the whole
Conflict model looks quite radical
Focused on society as a whole, but sees the various parts at odds with one another
Limited supply of resources, material and symbolic
People will be competing for resources to get more
Social groups would have different access; not evenly distributed
Social groups come into conflict
