Document Summary

Chapter 5 part 3: learning about a population proportion: testing about a population. Set alpha: check assumptions for the test, calculate the test statistic and p-value, evaluate p-value and report a conclusion in context of the problem. Null hypothesis (h0) there is no effect, no difference, nothing has changed or is happening: status quo. Alternative hypothesis (ha) there is a relationship, difference, something has changed or is happening. We hope the data will be strong enough to reject the null hypothesis and support the alternative hypothesis. The null and alternative hypotheses refer to the population parameter, not results of a sample. One-sided or one-tailed hypothesis test the alternative hypothesis specifies a single direction. Two-sided or two-tailed hypothesis test alternative hypothesis includes values in both directions. In a normal null hypothesis, the null value is the specific number the parameter equals if the null hypothesis is true.
