Document Summary

Stats 250: introduction to statistics - lecture 5: learning about a population proportion. When the true population parameter value is known, the sample statistic can be used to estimate the parameter. When this happens, the sample statistic may not be equal to the population parameter because it could change every time we take a new sample. The use of sample data to make judgment or decisions about populations. Most common are confidence interval estimation and hypothesis testing. A range of values that the researcher is fairly confident will cover the true, unknown value of the population parameter. We use a confidence interval to estimate the value of a population parameter. Uses sample data to attempt to reject a hypothesis about the population. Applied to population parameters by specifying a null value for the parameter-- a value that would indicate that nothing of interest is happening.
