Change in music over time: rights and integration to power. After voting rights act of 1965 disenfranchisement persisted in alabama and mississippi. Lowndes county freedom organization: started 1965, directed by sncc activist stokely carmichael, wanted to organize voter registration project in lowndes country, Alabama: rather than get involved in current democratic party in lowndes. Black panther = symbol: retreats, then attacks, motto of black power, huey newton and bobby seale of oakland, california request to use black panther as symbol for newly formed black panther party. Stokely becomes more black nationalist, black separatist, aggressive: attention turns to mississippi, 300,000 aa"s remain unregistered. A march against fear: major 1996 demonstration in the south. Launched by james meredith: intended a walk from memphis, tennessee to jackson, Mississippi to counter continuing racism and encourage african. Estimated 15,000 mostly black marchers by the end.
