I. What is Anthropology (noun):
A. Lecture definition: Study of all things human!
1. in the past and present
2. Biology & culture
B. Dictionary definition: the study of humankind, in particular:
a) (also cultural or social anthropology)the comparative study of human societies
and cultures and their development.
b) (also physical anthropology)the science of human zoology, evolution, and
ecology.
II. 4 Subfields of Anthropology
1. Cultural
a) All culture
b) Ethnographers
c) Urbanization
d) Used in business and politics
2. Linguistic (the scientific study of human languages - unique to humans)
a) Study off language
b) Origins
c) Changes and losses
3. Archaeology
a) “the study of materials things… or man’s garbage”
(1) There are literally are garbage studies today
b) Prehistorical, historical, underwater, etc.
4. Biological * (this class)
a) Very diverse field
b) Encompasses anything relate to human biology and human evolution!
c) In lots of circumstances, human culture has to be taken into account
d) Common things you think of when you hear biological anthropology
