Document Summary

There are a hundred billion neurons in the body. The resting membrane potential of a neuron is determined by the movement of potassium ions relative to other ions. Membrane potential: electric potential between inside and outside of membrane. Resting potential: membrane potential of a neuron during rest. Crucial: na+ / k+ pump and k+ leak channels. sodium ions on inside, potassium ions also on inside but leak. Sodium ions moving out of the neurons cytoplasm would result in making the inside more negative relative to the outside (because sodium ions are positively charged) Voltage gated na+ channels open during depolarization phase. Depolarization means making the charge less negative (adding more sodium) Initiation of an action potential decision to fire or not. Ana action potential in the presynaptic neuron does not always lead to an action potential in the postsynaptic neuron, An action potential always has the same shape.
