Predator keystone species prevents an herbivore from eliminating dominant plant species. Ecological succession the species living in a particular place gradually change over time as does the physical and chemical environment within that area. Takes place because through the process of living, organisms interact with the environment and gradually change it. Species are adapted to thrive in a very specific environment, so when conditions change, the existing species will be outcompeted by a different, better adapted species for that environment. Structures and architectures of plant communities will influence the animals species which can live in the microhabitats provided by the plants. Primary succession starting from scratch (post volcanic eruption) Secondary succession the change in an existing community following a disturbance. Succession is directional different stages in a particular habitat can be predicted. Three stages series that merge into one another.
