BIOLOGY 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Concussion, Mouthguard
Document Summary
Both the spinal cord and the brain are protected in similar ways and are made of similar cells. They both have a very limited capacity to regenerate in humans. Paralysis and concussion (a mild tbi) differ in location and the severity of trauma. For many injuries that would cause paralysis in the spinal cord, it would cause a severe tbi in the brain. Additionally, one can get a concussion in their spinal cord. It is similar to a brain concussion: there is some damage that disrupts electrical activity, but not the type of damage that results in cells being broken (no gross damage). How long does a concussion take to heal: grade of concussion scale was previously used to determine when athletes should return. The grade of concussion scale would indicate the severity of a concussion. This system is no longer in use: most concussions do not coincide with a loss of consciousness.
