Document Summary

Purpose: the purpose of this experiment was to use acetic acid and 1-isopetanol synthesize isopentyl acetate via fischer esterification previously developed boiling and distillation techniques, and calculated amounts of reagents. Infrared spectrome- try (ir) will then be used to identify the product and analyze its purity. To a 5ml round bottom flask (rbf), acetic acid acid (0. 7428ml, 0. 013mol), 1-isobu- tanol (1. 146ml, 0. 011mol), sulfuric acid (0. 1ml) and boiling chips were added and the contents mixed thoroughly. A distillation apparatus was set up, and the mixture was boiled gently. After the boiling period, the rbf was raised away from the heat, and the product from the rbf was then transferred via pipetting into a clean centrifuge tube containing water (1ml). Layers were mixed thoroughly for 3 minutes via vigorously pipetting the layers together. The lower aqueous layer was the removed via pipetting, and then saturated sodium chloride (1ml) was added to the centrifuge tube and thoroughly mixed.
