Although we have come up with all of these examples of how they are different, we can still think of many counterexamples. Modern perceptions of religion shape the way we think of the relationship between religion and magic which makes us think they are more different than they actually are. Ancient religion is different from what we experience now, thus making ancient religion closer to magic. They hit women they pass by with the goat hide as a good luck charm and a way to get pregnant. The romans did not know why they did this annual ritual, but they thought they needed to do it or else the gods will be angry.
