COMM 226 Lecture 14: 10:14 and 10:17 Notes
Document Summary
How media influences our interpretations: example: picture from iraq. O(cid:374)e half looks like a gu(cid:374) to the soldier"s head. One half shows that they are helping him by giving him water. Framing is a broader concept than attribute agenda setting: framing can include many more ways of how people can interpret a situation. Involves a selection of a preferred understanding from a plurality of interpretations. Fra(cid:373)i(cid:374)g has a stro(cid:374)ger effe(cid:272)t o(cid:374) thi(cid:374)gs (cid:449)e do(cid:374)"t ha(cid:448)e a dire(cid:272)t relationship to; things we do(cid:374)"t k(cid:374)o(cid:449) a lot a(cid:271)out. Some studies look at a very micro level: certai(cid:374) (cid:449)ordi(cid:374)g effe(cid:272)ts the (cid:373)essage (cid:894)ex: (cid:862)terrorist(cid:863)(cid:895, figurative language, use of quotation marks. How does the use of comedy effect framing: comedy allows for a topic to be more relatable and understandable, makes the information less serious/harsh, makes the topic or controversy more neutral. There are always three different ways to look at something: one perspective, the other perspective, the truth.
