Education 229 Notes 3 September 16, 2012 Culture, Education, and Development  The more education you have correlates with the amount of money you make over the course of your life but what happens when there is a global recession?  Give us choices in education and the parents choices to allow their kids  We are worrying about whether or not college students are well enough educated and then on the other hand we are worried about whether or not students are over educated o The University has no Clothes Advertisement (New York Magazine, April 2011)- what exactly is a university degree promising you?  What happens when we only think about education in terms of jobs o Mohammad Bouazzi, Tunisian Protester- started a protest because he was frustrated as a university graduate and he was turned down o Linked to college education people who were unable to find jobs  One of educations main goals is to reproduce culture  What does the recession tell us about culture?  What is culture? o Shared meaning- its something that we all as a society have agreed to adopt that meaning, what we come to learn as shared meaning o It can be changed over time o Context specific o Culture is humanly produced o Representations of power-Within culture we have power structures  Ideas of what gender should be is learned from birth (ex: what color clothes you wear influences peoples opinion on children)  Power Dynamics o The implications of power o Thomas S. Popkewitz’s Book- Struggling for the soul  Exposes many of the power dynamics and cultural assumptions that are apparent in our society and environments  Talks about giving the students hw cause they wouldn’t do it but then learned that they had work after school, didn’t have a desk at home, didn’t go home till later—people just didn’t have the time or access to do the work  Cutting down time throughout the day to do the homework rather than gym or other time  He points out that by cutting homework they are cutting the students education—a lot of learning happens in your own time  The teacher feels responsive because students are learning but they are still falling behind on a national level  What seems to be responsive but is reinforcing inequity and the idea about power dynamics  Culture is making clear and impli
