Deafness: a hearing impairment that is so severe that the child is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing,with or without amplification. Sound transmission is blocked in the middle or outer ear. Involves the inner ear (cochlea) and/or the auditory nerve. Involves (middle ear: mixed hearing loss outer ear, cochlear nerve,cochlea, central hearing loss. 1 of every 10 people has a hearing loss. Over age 65, 1 in every 3 persons has some degree of hearing loss. Disorders associated with hearing loss in children: occurring in 1 in 1,000 live births. Contracted in utero or postnatally from the mother.
