Controlled part of chile for 4 months. Large landowners in central valley produced wheat for export. Other elites felt wheat producers had captured the state. Could not get state aid for themselves. Roads and rrs for internal commerce, not just exports. Chile deepened export economy at the expense of internal markets. Diverse coalition of people of various classes. With loss, elites ended up getting back together, ending. Politically, victors cracked down on civil liberties. By 1869, many exiled rebels had returned. Jose manuel balmaceda elected president in 1886. Came to power after war of the pacific (1879-1884) Chile gained valuable land in atacama desert valuable mineral deposits. Attempts to diversify the economy challenged the power of established major elites: bankers, wheat exporters, nitrate producers.
