Irregular sleep: eyes closed, limb movement, grimaces, eye move, waking. Babies habituate to sound, change frequency, respond jnd. Parents learn from assessment, especially helpful when child is not developing in typical manner. African-americans 2-3 times more likely, native americans 3 times more likely. Put baby on back instead of stomach, don"t smoke. Child abuse: shaken & brain bounces against skull, swelling, bruising, bleeding. Damages nerve fibers in neck, making breathing difficult. Gesell: development is maturation, cultural influences on walking. Crawling, walking, using hands, grasping affords opportunity to learn. Skin losses newborn look, permanent hair, vision & hearing improving. Fine motor skills: grasping toys, open & close hands, reach, smooth sequence.
