Personal agency (how do you see yourself in the future) Ability to reflect on one"s thoughts and memories. Groups of friends that share norms, values, influence each other. Early/middle childhood: peer groups are informal, turnover, change. 10-12 peer groups are more important, membership requirements, gender separation, conformity. School age: popularity good indicator of group membership, some more popular than others. Bullying occurs when there is a power discrepancy, occurs in all cultures, more common in boys. They annoy me, to get even, it"s fun, others do it, they are wimps, show i"m tough . Prejudice: negative attitudes without reason towards people because of their membership in a certain group, usually based on race, ethnicity, social class, or other noticeable attributes. Implies an in group and an out group, pressure from in group to maintain status quo. Older children less likely to have a friend from another ethnic group. Ethnic identity is based on identification with group.
