Idea that the words of the constitution should be interpreted as they would have been understood by someone living in the era in which the constitution was ratified. His nomination was not sent to the senate judiciary committee and therefore no vote was taken. Although he is a modern liberal he would have tipped the ideological balance of the court toward the liberal end of the spectrum for the first time in about 40 years. Democrats vehemently objected to the decision of republicans to refuse to hold hearings or a vote for garland. Democrats filibustered gorsuch"s nominations in the senate. 60 votes are needed to end a filibuster. Republicans did not have the 60 votes so they ended the use of filibuster for supreme court nominees the nuclear option by a 52-48 party line vote. Gorsuch was confirmed by a 51-45 vote. Nominated by ghw bush in 1991 to replace seat vacated by thurgood marshall.
