The nuclei are the centers of syllables and are usually vowels. Every syllable has a nucleus and every vowel is a nucleus. In that case they are marked with [m ] in the transcription. The group of consonants that make up the opening of a syllable are called an onset. The group of consonants that make up the end of a syllable are called a coda.
