Document Summary

Colon cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Cancer has not grown beyond the inner layer of the colon wall. Grown to outer layer of the wall. Tumor has invaded several layers of the bowel, but has not spread outside the wall. Tumor is through the wall, not yet spread to the lymph nodes. Cancer has grown through the muscle layer of the bowel or rectum and invaded nearby tissue, but has not spread to the lymph nodes. Cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, but not to other parts of the body. Cancer spreads to distant sites in the body, such as liver or lung. This is also known as metastatic bowel cancer. The cancer has spread from where it started in the colon or rectum, to other organs often the liver and lung. Normal tissue forms a polyp projecting from the colon wall. The survival of patients with colorectal cancer decreases markedly with disease progression.
