Document Summary
Lecture 18: hormones, genes, and breast cancer (cont. ) For patients with lcis (lobular carcinoma in situ) the risk for developing invasive cancer in the same breast is about 18% - and 14% in the other breast - after 20 years. Ductal carcinoma and cancers form when ducts get blocked. This type of cancer breaks through ducts and has the ability to go anywhere in the rest of the breast and circulation of any part of the body. Invasive ductal carcinoma (idc): this is invasive breast cancer that penetrates the wall of a duct. It comprises between 70 - 80% of all breast cancer cases; an invasive malignancy that has spread beyond the ducts (metastasis). Develops in the milk ducts and spreads to the rest of the body: Milk ducts are tiny tubes that carry milk produced from the lobules to the nipple. Next, there is abnormal growth of cells; changes in genes causes cells to divide uncontrollably.
