Parenthetical Phrases
-They describe a noun
-Can be dropped from a sentence without changing the meaning
-They add info to the sentence
-Are not at the beginning of a sentence
-Make sure to be careful with them

Common Misuse of Parenthetical Phrases
-WRONG: The panda bear eats, shouts, and leaves.
i) the commas make this sentence have a whole different meaning
-RIGHT: The panda bear eats shouts and leaves.
-WRONG: I helped my friend jack off a horse.
i) lack of commas make this sentence wrong
-RIGHT: I helped my friend, Jack, off a horse.
Semi-Colons
-Must have two independent clauses
-Independent clauses must be closely related BUT provide different info
-Example of wrong use of comma w independent clauses:
i) Love is blind; there is a monkey in a tree.
a) In this example the two independent clauses are NOT related
b) Because the clauses are not related that is not the correct way to use a
