Individual identities: ability, intelligence, temperament (interaction of biology and social contexts and social identities) Social identities: gender, ses, race/ethnicity, culture, religion, etc. experience varies by social contexts. Social contexts: bbm levels family, peer groups, school, community, religious groups, state/country, time in history. Our identities are a complex combination of our individual social identities in our social contexts. Social identities: class/ses, gender/sex, gender identity, race/ethnicity/culture, sexual orientation, age, religion. Misguided attempts at prejudice reduction: being reactive instead of proactive, short-term band aid solutions. Assembly: focusing efforts at the individual rather than systemic level, zero tolerance policies (pushes behaviors out of sight harder to intervene, peer mediation or conflict resolution approaches. Mediating a bullying incident may send inappropriate messages to the students who are involved (such as you are both partly right and partly wrong or we need to work out this conflict between you ) Bullying and prejudice is not the same as conflict.
