Attachment a strong emotional bond between infant and caregiver. Strange situation test mom leaves infant alone with a stranger than returns to room and infant"s reaction to the situation is studied. 4 styles of attachment: secure cry when mom leaves, then explore/play fine. Parent knows when to support child and when to let go: aviodant/insecure doesn"t cry when mom leaves, doesn"t have interest in her return, and acts like the stranger is the parent. Parent is distant and child is not the #1 priority: ambivalent/insecure seeks mom when she leaves, when she returns fluctuates between seeking and rejecting. Parent is inconsistent when caring for the child: disorganized/disoriented not well defined. This style will not be on the exam, but know that there are 4 styles. Securely attached: comfortable in relationships, depends on partner, seeks closeness, doesn"t fear abandonment. Avoidant/insecure: uncomfortable getting close to others, trust issues, won"t depend on partners, very independent, feel partner is too clingy.
