Document Summary
Adolescents participate in youth culture to varying degrees: the intensity or quality of youth culture seems to vary from one historical era to the next. The development and advance of youth culture is thought to parallel technological advances: post-figurative cultures are societies in which technology has had a minimal effect. Adolescents learn as much from other young people as they do from elders: prefigurative cultural patterns are beginning to develop in which youth are teaching elder. There are a variety of themes that seem to accentuate contemporary youth culture: clothing and appearance are particular noticeable factor that distinguish youth culture. Clothing and appearance give adolescents a way of exploring identity. Automobiles are another trapping of contemporary youth culture: in the past 20 years ownership or ready access to an automobile has doubled to over 40% of driver-age kids, it"s a status symbol that promises freedom and mobility.
