The us health care industry is the largest and most powerful employer in the nation. Health care will continue to grow because: aging population, growth in population from immigration, expansion of aca. Physicians play a central role in evaluating the patient. Mds= trained in allopathic med, that looks at med treatment. Dos= emphasizes musculoskeletal system, such as correction of joint tissue. Primary care physicians/generalists are trained in family/ general medicine, general internal medicine and pediatrics, provide preventative medicine like exams, immunizations, pap smears, patients problems are less severe and occur less frequently, lower salary. Specialists: non primary care, must seek certificate in medical specialization, takes more years of advanced training, six functional groups internal medicine. Specialty care is: seen after patient has seen a general practitioner, requires referral from primary care provider, episodic, more focused and intense, limited to illness episode, time spent in inpatient hospitals, using state of art technology. Physicians practice in a variety of setting and arrangements.
