Document Summary

Life on earth depends on plants and their interaction with light. On land, sun loving plants capture solar energy and produce food and oxygen upon which animals depend. In the ocean, algae and photosynthetic bacteria use sunlight to make food for fish and other marine life. Algae are major producers of oxygen, a (cid:498)by-product(cid:499) of photosynthesis. After producing carbohydrates, a plant either uses them as energy, stores them, or builds them into complex compounds such as oils and proteins. All of these food products are called photosynthates. The plant uses its own sugar for growth when light is limited, or transports them to its roots or developing fruits. Introduction to photosynthesis compounds (sugars) from inorganic compounds (co2 and water) Plants, algae, some bacteria use the energy of sunlight to put together organic. Only green plants and some bacteria have the ability to create food from sunlight, Why is it important? water, and air.
