The following is a ge(cid:374)e(cid:396)alized se(cid:395)ue(cid:374)(cid:272)e (cid:396)efe(cid:396)(cid:396)ed to as the (cid:862) (cid:272)ie(cid:374)tifi(cid:272) method. (cid:863) more information on the terms and concepts can be found in the textbook. Scientific information on nutrition can come from several sources: Cell culture studies using microbial or mammalian cells. In class we discussed at length several different designs for nutrition studies involving human subjects. Study designs: randomized clinical trials (or randomized controlled trials) (rcts) An experimental design involves the express manipulation of an experimental variable (the treatment). Study participants suitable to the research question are randomly assigned to either the treatment group (receive the experimental treatment, e. g. a nutritional supplement) or the control group (do not receive the treatment). The treatment and control groups are made as large as is feasible (adequate sample size) to reduce the magnitude of random effects. Randomization is the best way to ensure that treatment and control groups are similar in every way except for the experimental treatment.
