2/27 Bias: What is it and Who Has It? • Bias is another word for prejudice • Prejudice is a preconceived judgment or notion • Prejudice is a function of the stereotypes we hold • Stereotypes are the attributes we associate with certain groups o Cognitive structures called schema   Stereotypes • A stereotype is a group of concepts related to a social group and consists of three parts 1. Group concept 2. Defining features: concept that defines the individual as a group member 1. Characteristic features: concepts associated with group because of previous experience of observer   • Discrimination: when individuals and/or institutions act upon their prejudices • Racism: (and sexism and heterosexism and all ­isms) is a function of the belief that people are essentially (biologically) inferior/superior because of  shared characteristics and is manifested in discriminatory behavior     Media and Political Bias • Media corporations are powerful political actors • Me
