Menkes disease or kinky hair disease: genetic defect in copper absorption. The most common manifestation is anemia due to impaired iron absorption. Excess copper intake can cause liver damage. Wilson"s disease: toxicity due to inability to excrete copper in bile. The best dietary sources are whole grains and nuts. A constituent of some enzymes and activator of others. Seafood, kidney, liver, and eggs are excellent sources. Keshan disease: a combination of selenium deficiency and infection with a virus. Cancer: selenium deficiency can increase cancer risk. Ul: 400 g/day from diet and supplements combined. Supplements have not shown to add additional benefits in the general population. Seafood and plant grown near the sea are high in iodine. Most of the iodine in the north american comes from iodized salt.
