Barriers pwd face begin with people"s attitudes. Attitudes changing, misunderstanding about what it"s like living with disability influence attitudes. Words have power - make people feel valued or demeaned. Communicate effectively with respect - stay current. Use of words- reflect awareness, dignity and position to attitude about people with disability. Ex. does not reflect deaf people- community- don"t feel like minority. Avoid generic labels such as normal, crippled, retard. Describes who person is not what they have. Disability- condition of body or mind ( impairment) - makes difficult for person to do activities (activity limitation) and interact with world around them (participation restrictions) Activity limitation - difficult seeing, hearing, problem solving. Participation restriction - normal daily activities,social, obtain health care/ preventative services. Complex phenomenon that reflects interaction between person"s body function and features of society they live in. Barrier free society = offers support- pwd can participate all society aspects. 2013: 50 million - largest minority group.
