Document Summary
Physics 181 the kinematics of the not so free fall 1. The kinematics of the not so free fall. Last week we determined the acceleration due to gravity, , by studying a freely falling object. However, the more precise and careful experimenters discovered a non-negligible systematic error of air resistance that reduced their accuracy, and any further increases of precision would bring them no closer to the accepted value of 980. 35 cm/s2. Now we begin an epic continuation of this experiment that tries to manage our systematic errors in a more sophisticated way while providing a formidable challenge to our experimental skills. Air resistance is a force that depends on the velocity of an object. Sticking your hand out of a moving automobile can nicely confirm this for you; the faster you move causes a bigger force pushing back on your hand. Unfortunately, a velocity dependent force is too complicated mathematically to properly treat at our current level.
