Fanum is a shrine or sacred precinct, applied to people, attendants or devotees of a cult. Sacra (plural of sacer)- traditional cults, publica or privata. College of pontiffs (rome/ another word for priests) Christians called out during holy times because they practiced their religion in private and were hunted down for treason because they didn"t treasure their emperor. Pontifex maximus- emperor in the imperial period. Cicero (107-43 bce)- first person to use a version of the world religion. Was referring to traditions and how you read things from ancestors. 5th century ce - these people believed in only one god. Changed word relegere to religare, to mean to bind fast via notion of place an obligation on or bond between humans and gods. Religion = what is engrained, familiar and correct. Monotheism- one god and no other gods. In the medieval period: to enter religion meant to become a christian priest, nun, monk, etc.
