Internet - data transmission network that provides for communication of
information from computer-to-computer throughout the world
• Infrastructure that makes the worldwide web possible
• From day-to-day, the infrastructure changes
www = worldwide web
• Collection of activities that we do using the internet
• E.g., chatting, downloading, searching, database, viewing webpage
Circuit Switching vs Packet Switching
• Packet switching
o Internet is completely driven by packet switching
o Takes the data from a communication line
o Packets (all 0s and 1s)
• Header (1)
▪ destination
• Trailer (4)
• Number (2)
• Data (3)
o Does what circuit cannot do
• No dedication needed between lines
• Circuit switching
o Provides a physical, direct path between one point of contact and
another (telephone example)
