EEB 3408W Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Equilibrium Point, Dn2, Intraspecific Competition
Document Summary
Both are caused by lack of unlimited resources. Logistic model can be revised to show effects of competition (1-n/k) means that every individual affects the population change the same way (subtracts from the carrying capacity equally) Assume 2 species are population 1 and 2; denoted n1 and n2 (k1-n1-n2)/k1 means that the population of species 2 affects the carrying capacity of population 1 in the same way that population 1 does. But since the species are different, they do not need the same amount of resources. Individuals of population 2 will affect the carrying capacity differently than population 1 individuals do. Competition coefficients alpha and beta are used to multiply the effects of either population on the carrying capacity. Alpha - compensates, number of species 1 displaced by every individual of species 2. Competition works against both species population so beta is used for population 2. Formulas are used for predicting populations affected by competition.
