Early branch of animal behavior, associated with central and northern european researchers. Fixed action patterns, imprinting, and aggression- like looking up and to the left then back down. Only parallel language out there in non-human animals. Tutored desmond morris, richard dawkins and anne pusey. Ethogram was coined- basis is that natural selection also acts on minds, and therefore behavior instincts. Each species has its own nature, shaped by natural selection. Ethologists focused on experiments in the lab and field. This has a high internal validity, but low external validity. It"s not necessarily the case that the situation you are focusing on is going to be encountered in nature by the animal. Naturalistic field studies of behavior started on recently. Internal validity is low, you can"t control for much. Useful when starting out with a new study. But, potentially records frequencies but can"t calculate rates.
