FSCN 2021 Lecture 2: 4 February -2
Document Summary
Anatomy of cells and tools for studying microorganisms. Traces of zinc, cobalt, copper and manganese (zn, co, cu, and mo) These elements are found in the form of water, inorganic ions, small molecules and macromolecules. Trace elements are metal ions required by certain cells in such small amounts that it is difficult to detect them and not necessary to add them to culture media as nutrients. Present as contaminants of the water or other media components. Found in the environment from burning things such as coal. Prokaryote comes from the greek words for pre nucleus. One circular chromosome, not in a membrane. No histones (which bind and regulate dna) Average size: 0. 2-1. 0 micrometer x 2-8 micrometers. Most bacteria are monomorphic (single shape), a few are pleomorphic (different shapes) Gram-stain only works for peptidoglycan cell walls. Eukaryote comes from the greek words for true nucleus. Anchored to the wall and membrane by the basal body.
