Eating is different from feeding because of the ways people use foods. Hunt, gather, cultivate plants, raise livestock, process/prepare foods, and cook foods -social aspects. Food has meaning, often tied to self-identity. Food has symbolic use because of relationships, association, or convention. Traditio(cid:290)ally, upper class ate (cid:907)white bread(cid:908) a(cid:290)d the poor ate (cid:907)brow(cid:290) bread(cid:908), today it is the opposite. Traditionally, bread was associated with fertility and used in weddings. Food is not defined in the same way. The outlook is often different, some just for nutrients and some for happiness. All foods we eat is not universal. The concept of raw vs. cooked foods differs universally. Gender- social pressure on women to eat smaller portions. Biological-lactose intolerant- no lactase to digest lactose; pregnant and needs more food. Health status- special diet and its certain foods. What is edible to one group, may not be to another.
