Gastroenterologist: physician who specializes in the digestive system. 8 incisors: are shaped like a chisel to slice and cut into food. 4 cuspids: pointed top for puncture and tearing. 8 bicuspids/12 molars: flattened surfaces for grinding and crushing food. Crown: projects above the gum and is covered in enamel, the hardest substance in the body. Dentin: makes up the majority of the tooth, similar to bone but harder. Pulp cavity: surrounded by dentin and contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues. Root canals: tubular canals that connect blood vessels and nerves to the cavity from the jaw. 2 parotid glands, 2 submandibular glands, 2 sublingual glands. Prevent bacteria growth (lysozyme and immunoglobulin a) Plaque and dental calculus (tartar) is a precursor to dental diseases. Dental caries: tooth decay and cavity formations.
