PHSL 3051 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Stroke Volume, Colloid, Endothelium
Document Summary
Capillary density is related to metabolic activity of cells. Endothelial cells have holes in them (not in their connection, but actual cell) Precapillary sphincters: controlling flow capillary to capillary. Contracted: cuts off supply to some of the capillaries but not all. Albumin is most prominent protein in blood. Nodes - fluid in contact with immunologically active cells. Returns filtered plasma proteins to circulatory system. Most proteins stay in the blood capillaries. Pick up fat absorbed and tranfer to circulatory system. 61-70% of blood in body is found in the systemic veins and venules. When skeletal muscles compress the veins, the force blood toward the heart. Valves ensure one-way flow in veins, prevents backflow. During inspiration, pressure changes in the thoracic and abdominal cavities promote increased movement of venous blood back to the heart. Pushing blood up, back to the right heart. Must match cardiac output through stroke volume.
