Personality defined: distinctive and characteristic pattern of thoughts, emotions, and behavior that uniquely define a person. *distinctiveness: people react differently to the same situation (e. g. , an upcoming party) *consistency: stability of a person"s thoughts, feelings, and behavior over time and in different situations: states vs. traits, states are temporary, traits are enduring. Attributing personality traits: right now, low in sociability, low in impulsivity, high in conscientiousness, why, the norms of the current situation - being in class - constrains your behavior. Two conceptualizations of personality: nomothetic, compared with others, everyone has certain traits to some degree, there are a limited set of traits, they differ in amount/strength. Idiographic: unique constellation of special attributes, one cannot compare across people, must examine what each person is like (similar to case study)
