Creates capacity for role taking: teaches us what our roles are and how to behave in our roles. Creates the tendency for people to act in socially acceptable ways: makes people the bearers of culture, we learn our culture, what"s acceptable and how we do things. It is a combination of biology and social interactions that makes us who we are. Total institution: an institution in which one is totally immersed that controls all the basics of day-to-day life. Ex: military, prison: members of our family are the first agents of socialization that we encounter. Examples: asking to go to the bathroom, sharing bathroom space at home across genders: charles horton cooley, looking-glass self. The self emerges from our ability to see from the point of view of others. Ex: race: doesn"t mean the same thing to everyone, expectations are not the same in every society, type of status that is very much social.
