TH 1501 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Electromagnetic Spectrum
Document Summary
Light: the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum which can come in white and colors, engages the eyes. Caravaggio: this painting utilizes chiaroscuro - high, dramatic contrast - well by making intense light and shadow to pull focus to particular areas of the work. This work makes me think of revolution, if that counts as a descriptive word. A state of rebellion, perhaps, plotting in the dark, but the light shines on their plans, or maybe there is hope for their plotting. Juan sanchez cotan: again, using chiaroscuro, the intense contrast of this painting is evocative. While i normally wouldn"t associate that word with vegetables, i use it here with the intention that it makes you think in a way that you normally wouldn"t by literally highlighting the mundane. Value, tone: the degree of darkness or light (i. e. shade, midtone, highlight) in a given area in a medium.
