Document Summary

Certain needs are more basic than others. More basic needs must be met first. Nursing care is often directed toward meeting unmet or threatened needs. Maslow"s hierarchy provides a framework for nursing assessment: nursing interventions which meet more basic needs have priority. The nclex uses maslow"s hierarchy to structure questions. Physiologic needs: most basic in the hierarchy of needs. Oxygen = most essential of all needs. Balance between intake and elimination of fluids. Physical activity and rest: when nclex asks, what should the nurse do first? pick the airway, breathing, circulation answer. Safety and security needs: come next in priority. Physical safety and security means being protected from potential or actual harm. The nclex treats pain and pain relief as a safety and security need. So pain is a lesser priority than airway/breathing/circulation. Love and belonging needs: met after physiologic and safety/security needs. Self-esteem needs: feeling good about oneself; positive self-esteem. Affected by role changes or body image changes.
