ANTH 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Eskimo Kinship, Kinship Terminology, Mosis
Document Summary
All societies have standard kinship names for specific categories of relatives. In euro-american kinship classification based on bilateral descent, all consanguines and affines are recognized as relatives. Specific kinship categories such as mother"s sister (mosi) or father"s sister (fasi) have the same name aunt . The same is true for father"s brother and mother"s brother = uncle . Euro-american kinship naming is typical of eskimo kinship classification. Only the nuclear family is classified as mother, father, brother, and sister. Mobr, fabr are both uncles and all offspring of the same generation as ego are. In this case, mobr is father, fabr is also father. The least complex naming system is the hawaiian. All children of the same generation are actually brother and sister. A very complex naming system is the sudanese system of kinship terminology. Most kin are not lumped under the same kinship term.
