Document Summary

Prokaryotic cells usually consist of a single compartment enclosed by a plasma membrane, while eukaryotic cells have many distinct membrane-enclosed organelles. The nuclear membranes and membranes of the er, golgi apparatus, endosomes, and lysosomes most likely originated by invagination of the plasma membrane. Mitochondria and chloroplasts may have been engulfed by primitive pre-eukaryotic cells with which they initially lived in symbiosis. Different organelles are composed of different proteins. Sorting signal an address on the protein"s amino acid sequence that directs the protein to the organelle in which it is required. In other words, x guarantees y: to see if a protein is sufficient, put the protein on a different protein and see if it does something else. If it does something else, that means the protein is sufficient. Loss of function mutations tend to be recessive because only one copy of the mutant allele is not sufficient for a mutant phenotype.
