Maps present a significant amount of information (the human brain can process this more quickly) Cartography: the science that deals with the construction, use, and principles behind maps. Geography: the science that analyzes the spatial distributions made visible by the map (a map is a tool for geographers) Cartographic scale: the idea that some unit of distance on a map is equivalent to a larger distance in the real world. Geographic scale: the area encompassed by a topic or study. Thematic maps: statistical maps that display a particular theme of the data in relation to space. Chloropleth maps: a thematic map in which areas are colored or shaded to represent the density of a particular phenomenal or to symbolize classed within it. Dot density maps: dot density maps use dots or other symbols to represent the number of occurrences of a given data characteristic in a particular location.
