GEOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Supercontinent Cycle, Biogeochemical Cycle, Oceanic Crust
Document Summary
Changes happens b/c earth"s internal heat makes the asthenosphere weak enough to flow. Keeps water above freezing point, makes changes to earth. Solar heat & solar warmth play roles. Change during which a supercontinent forms and later breaks apart: supercontinent cycle submerged. Sea level rises, shoreline moves inland, lowlying planes become. Global sedimentary cycle chart may largely reflect the cycle of world wide sea level change. Energy fueling earth system: internal radioactive decay, external solar radiation. Each stage in the rock cycle changes the earth by redistributing and modifying material (cid:1) Biogeochemical cycle: involves the passage of a chemical among living and nonliving reservoirs in the earth system most on or near the planets surface: nonliving: atmosphere, crust, ocean, living: planets, animals, microbes. Hydrologic cycle involves the movement of water from the reservoir to the reservoir to reservoir near earth surface.
